Grocery Store Finds: December 2018

Grocery Store Finds with Chef Julie Harrington, RD @ChefJulie_RD

While December is full of holiday parties and gatherings, I was still sticking to my normal grocery shopping routine. For 2019, I want to hear from you! What products should I be on the lookout for? What new items are being added to your grocery carts? Don’t hesitate to shoot me an email, or message on my Instagram or Facebook.

Dole Açaí Bowls

hand holding dole acai bowls

Skip the $12.00 açaí bowls out when you can enjoy them at home. Dole’s Açaí Bowls are perfectly portioned. The original bowl is a blend of açaí, bananas, and honey topped with strawberries, blueberries, honey oat granola, and coconut at only 210 calories per bowl. Açaí is incredibly rich in antioxidants, boasting three times the amount found in blueberries. So next, time skip the line at the playa bowl shop and stock up on these açaí bowls at home.

Whisps Parmesan Cheese Crisps

hand holding whisps parmesan cheese

These Whisp’s Parmesan Cheese Crips are simple parmesan cheese melted into little disks. If you are looking for a low-carb savory snack, these are for you! I dunked these into hummus and crumbled them on top of my salad. I mean, who doesn’t love cheese?

Green Giant
Cauliflower Crust Pizza

hand holding green giant cauliflower pizza crust

There are so many cauliflower crusts out there to choose from. I always want you to flip over the package at look at the ingredient list. I’m calling out some of the “cauliflower” crust imposters. I mean, if you are going to call it a cauliflower crust, cauliflower should be the first ingredient. (Note: ingredients are listed from most dense to least dense, meaning whatever the majority of the product is made up of is listed from first to last.) Green Giant’s Cauliflower Crust’s ingredients are: Cauliflower, Rice Flour, Corn Starch, Corn Flour, Cornmeal, Canola Oil, Salt, Black Pepper. Plus, this product is listed as one of Good Housekeeping’s Nutritionists Approved items.

Organic Girl White Cheddar
Ranch Style Dressing

hand holding organic girl white cheddar vinaigrette

While I usually make my own dressings, I do keep a few bottled dressings on hand. When looking for a pre-made dressing, I check the ingredient list, to make sure there are not a ton of fillers or artificial ingredients. I like Organic Girls white cheddar ranch-style dressing because of their ingredient list and of course the taste. Dunk these in oven-baked chicken wings. You can thank me later.

Dorot Chopped Basil

hand holding dorot chopped basil

If you have more of a black thumb like me, Dorot’s frozen herbs are awesome to keep stocked in your freezer. Simply pop out an herb pod and add to a recipe. They also have minced garlic!

Now let’s get shopping!

Grocery Store Finds: November 2018

Grocery Store Finds with Chef Julie Harrington, RD @ChefJulie_RD #dietitian #healthy #grocerystore #groceryshopping #nutrition

With the holiday season rolling in very fast, I try my best to stick to my normal eating patterns in between Thanksgiving and Christmas. That doesn’t stop me from finding new items on the shelves to try! Spend a little extra time next time you are at the grocery store. You may find some new items that may become staples in your kitchen.

Maple Vinegar

hand holding the maple guild maple vinegar

I stumbled upon this maple vinegar when I was shopping at whole foods. My favorite vinaigrette combination is olive oil, white balsamic vinegar, and maple syrup. I was shopping to restock my white balsamic vinegar stash in the pantry and I came across this maple vinegar. The Maple Guild is known for their premium maple syrup. They have pioneered a new way to make their syrup, by Steam-Crafting™. Instead of using direct heat to boil the maple sap, they steam-heat it, resulting in a velvety, Grade A Golden syrup that reveals all the nuance of real maple flavor. Their maple sap is naturally fermented and aged in California wine barrels creating a craft premium vinegar. I can’t wait to experiment with different dressing and marinade recipes.

Siggi’s Simple Sides

hand holding Siggi's Simple Sides - honey skyr with dried figs and walnuts

If you have been reading my Grocery Store Finds for a while now, you know my love for Siggi’s. Siggi’s is an Icelandic style cream-skyr. True to Icelandic tradition, Siggi’s products do not contain any artificial preservatives, thickeners, sweeteners, flavors or colors, and are made with milk from family farms who do not use growth hormones such as rBGH. Siggi’s dairy is fully committed to making rather delicious yogurt products with simple ingredients and not a lot of sugar, always. Now, they have fun wholesome sides right attached to stir in. You can find them right next to the other Siggi’s varieties in the dairy section of your grocery store.

Jada Spices Turmeric Salt

hand holding Jada Spices turmeric salt

Jada Spices are vegan turmeric-based all-purpose seasoning salts. Turmeric is known for its powerful anti-inflammatory benefits. This blend contains black pepper, as studies have shown, help absorb curcumin. Adding this spice blend to chicken adds a pop of color and flavor. You can find these on Amazon.

Health-Ade Bubbly Rose

Bubbly Rose Health-Ade via Chef Julie Harrington, RD @chefJulie_RD #rose #kombucha #probiotics

Health-Ade has a new flavor – Bubbly Rose! Health-Ade is the only commercial kombucha fermented 100% in glass to prevent plastic and metal leaching and it’s hand-crafted in super-small 2.5-gallon batches for premium quality. Kombucha is fermented tea, that naturally contains probiotics, which is great for gut health. The bubbly rose flavor uses a fruity and tart superfood blend featuring refreshingly delicious flavors including hawthorn berry, mangosteen, and pink rose. Follow your gut and try Health-Ade.

Simple Mills Soft Baked Cookies

hand holding simple mills soft baked dark chocolate toasted coconut cookies

Soft baked cookies – do I need to say more? What set’s these cookies apart is their ingredient list. Simple Mills Soft Baked are made with nutrient-dense almond flour and smartly sweetened with honey and coconut sugar. Thanks to these natural sweeteners, they contain 25% less sugar than our natural cookie counterparts. Dunk the dark chocolate toasted coconut cookies in hot chocolate. Thank me later.

Grocery Store Finds: October 2018

How is October already over? These months keep going by faster and faster.

Grocery Store Finds with Chef Julie Harrington, RD @ChefJulie_RD #dietitian #healthy #grocerystore #groceryshopping #nutrition

The fall season is officially here. This is my favorite time of the year. I love the cool crisp air, wearing scarves and boots, the start of the holiday season, and obviously the food! I would consider this my favorite food season as well. All the fall produce and the fall-flavored items (I’m talking to you pumpkin spice) hitting the grocery store shelves.

Of course, I couldn’t NOT post at least a couple of pumpkin-flavored items for the month of October. If you are looking for a Grocery Store Finds exclusive to just pumpkin items, check out last years Grocery Store Finds post by pumpkin guru, Maggie Michalczyk.

Purely Elizabeth. Pumpkin Spice Grain-Free Superfood Granola

hand holding Purely Elizabeth Pumpkin Spice Granola

Not only has Purely Elizabeth gotten new packaging, but they also added a few new flavors, like this pumpkin spice granola. This superfood granola is a blend of nuts and seeds combined with pumpkin spice, creating grain-free clusters. This granola packs a punch of pumpkin spice and I’ve been enjoying it on my yogurt for my afternoon snack.

hand holding Flackers Crackers

In search of a crunchy and seedy cracker? Find Flackers, made from flaxseed. They soak their organic flaxseeds in water to begin the germination process, boosting their nutritional value and making the seeds easier to chew, digest, and absorb. Then dehydrate the seeds at controlled low temperatures to lock-in vital nutrients like omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, and antioxidants that benefit overall health. My favorite flavor is “savory” Flacker, which adds garlic, onion, basil, & red chili pepper.

Siete Cashew Queso

hand holding Siete Cashew Queso

This month I was at FNCE (Food Nutrition Conference & Expo) and Siete had a booth sampling their new queso. When I tell you this is good, it’s like eating the whole jar kind of good. Of course, you should pair them with Siete Grain Free Tortilla Chips. The base of this queso is cashews mixed making it dairy-free queso.

Delighted By Pumpkin Spice Hummus

hand holding Delighted By Pumpkin Pie Hummus

I’ve told you about Delighted By Dessert Hummus before, but the last time I was at the grocery store I turned the corner and saw a new flavor taking up space – Pumpkin Pie! Of course, I just HAD to try it. I dunked both graham crackers and apple slices in the pumpkin pie hummus. Best. Snack. Ever.

Eden Organic Canned Beans

hand holding Eden Organic Canned Beans

You might be thinking .. “Uh, okay Julie .. I think we’ve all seen canned beans at the grocery store before. This is not anything new” Well, I have news for you. You probably have seen Eden Organic canned beans on the shelves and maybe have purchased them before too, but did you notice they have an extra ingredient in their can? Kombu Seaweed. These beans are cooked with a bit of kombu sea vegetable. You don’t taste the kombu, but its natural glutamic acid softens and enhances the flavor of beans and helps with digestions, not leaving you feeling bloated or gassy after consuming beans.

Grocery Store Finds: September 2018

There are so many new products hitting the shelves soon. This dietitian has the inside scoop.

Grocery Store Finds with Chef Julie Harrington, RD @ChefJulie_RD #dietitian #healthy #grocerystore #groceryshopping #nutrition

This is the first-ever Grocery Store Finds post, where I haven’t actually tried the products yet myself. Last month was Expo East and was hoping to get there, but my schedule was already booked with cooking classes and other events. I vicariously was following the #expoeast on Instagram and seeing all these new products that were announced and soon to hit the shelves if they haven’t already.

Maybe it’s the dietitian in me, but when I see a new product, I am intrigued. Some of these brands you probably have heard of before, but they are expanding their product lines with new items.

Wild Friends Nut Butter with Collagen

Wild Friends with Collagen Peptides

Wild Friends partnered with Vital Proteins, makers of high-quality, grass-fed collagen products, to make these nutrient-dense nut butter. Why did they choose collagen? Collagen is a vital building block of our hair, skin, nails, bones, and joints. Our bodies naturally produce collagen, but as we age, the production decreases. Incorporating collagen into your diet can encourage natural collagen production and has been shown to promote healthy cartilage, joint and bone health, skin tone and elasticity, increased athletic performance, gut health, and deeper sleep. One serving of Wild Friends Collagen Nut Butter packs in 8 grams of protein per serving. The second I see this in my grocery store, it will for sure end up in my cart.

Chosen Foods Vegan Mayo

Chosen Foods Vegan Mayo

Vegan mayo? How is that even possible. Right on the jar, it says that it is made with avocado oil, but that is liquid. I did a little research and found out how they make a spreadable consistency. The magic is aquafaba! Aquafaba is the liquid leftover from soaking or cooking garbanzo beans. The water absorbs proteins and starches from the beans, becoming more viscous along the way. Its viscosity is similar to that of eggs and egg whites, making aquafaba the perfect egg substitute. Chosen Foods blends aquafaba with avocado oil, to create a 100% vegan mayo that can truly be described as plant-based. Use this mayo as you normally would – on sandwiches, wraps, or as a base for sauces and dressings.

Health Warrior Protein Muffin

Health Warrior Protein Muffin

A protein muffin made in 60 seconds – I’m intrigued! I was very excited to see sorghum listed at the first ingredient. Sorghum is, a cereal grain native to Asia and Africa, that is naturally gluten-free, packed with protein and fiber, and full of antioxidants like policosanols. They use pumpkin seed protein to add extra protein for a quick and filling breakfast or snack.

Cece’s Veggie Noodle Co.

Cece's Veggie Noodle Co

Cece’s Veggie Noodle Co. has expanded its line beyond veggie noodles. They now have rice varieties and veggie-packed meals. What I like about these are that they are fresh and super convenient. I don’t know about you, but have you ever tried spiralizing a beet? It looks like a murder scene on my cutting board. Take a short cut and utilize these conveniently prepped veggies.

Soozy’s Muffins

Soozy's Muffins

Find Soozy’s Muffins in the frozen aisle. Soozy’s Muffins are made with all-natural, unprocessed ingredients, and are free from gluten, grains, soy, dairy, GMOs, fillers, stabilizers, and additives. Enjoy these muffins for breakfast, for dessert or as a snack. It’s convenient, easy, tasty, and goes well with your morning coffee, afternoon tea or a tall glass of milk at any time of the day.

Grocery Store Finds: August 2018

A BBQ low in sugar and veggie-based baking flour – Are you intrigued? These are just two of this Registered Dietitian’s Grocery Store Finds this month.

Grocery Store Finds with Chef Julie Harrington, RD @ChefJulie_RD #dietitian #healthy #grocerystore #groceryshopping #nutrition

While fancy packaging and marketing do sometimes catch your eye, always look further into the item by reading the nutrition label and ingredients to tell if it’s a good match for you or not. We are all human and any reasoning like that is sometimes thrown out the window when food choices are selected from simply what you are craving and that’s okay too. You’ll see what I mean with my last pick of this post.

Caulipower Baking Mix

caulipower cauliflower-based baking mix

A baking mix made with cauliflower? I’m intrigued. I have yet to bake with it yet. I just picked it up this week. I like already that you can swap it in any recipe cup-for-cup. I am happy to see dried cauliflower as the first ingredient, then followed by brown rice flour, and other whole grain flours. Have you tried this before? I’m trying to decide what kind of recipe I want to try making with this first!

Skinny Dipped Almonds

skinny dipped almonds - dark chocolate raspberry

While I’m not really a fan of calling any foods, “skinny” xyz, I couldn’t keep this snack a secret from you guys. Whole almonds are dipped in a thin layer of artisan dark chocolate and finished with a sprinkle of raspberry. I love the raspberry chocolate combination. They also have dark chocolate cocoa and dark chocolate espresso flavors.

MUSH Overnight Oats

Mush overnight oats

I occasionally watch Shark Tank. I’m of course always intrigued by the food pitches to the sharks. Wild Friends was one brand that was on Shark Tank that appears in my grocery cart often. MUSH is another Shark Tank win. While overnight oats are pretty simple to make on your own, this is great for convenience. I can see myself grabbing this for a quick breakfast or snack when I am on the road or traveling. The lid even has a built-in spoon. With simple ingredients and dates to naturally sweeten the oat mix, it was delicious. The texture and taste was an overall win.

Dinosaur Bar-B-Que Sauce

Dinosaur Bar-B-Que Sauce

One of my friends is known as the “condiment queen”. While I enjoy condiments too, they can also be a sneaky addition of a lot of added sugar, especially in a condiment like BBQ sauce. Another brand of BBQ sauce (I won’t name any names) has 16 grams of sugar per two tablespoons. Dinosaur, in my opinion, has even better flavor and 6 grams of sugar per two tablespoons. Try it for yourself!

Tate’s Bake Shop Cookies

Tate's Bake Shop chocolate chip cookies

This impulse purchase was totally contributed by marketing. I listen to z100 every morning on the radio and for the past 2 weeks every morning they either had an ad or was talking about how delicious Tate’s Bake Shop Cookies are. These were on the end cap of the grocery store and I just had to see what all the fuss was about. I’m usually not a fan of crispy cookies. I’m more of a soft and chewy chocolate chip cooking kind of gal. I must admit this is a pretty dang good crispy chocolate chip cookie. I can see these cookies being great for assembling homemade ice cream sandwiches.

Grocery Store Finds: July 2018

Find out what new items were added to this Registered Dietitian’s grocery cart this month.

Grocery Store Finds with Chef Julie Harrington, RD @ChefJulie_RD #dietitian #healthy #grocerystore #groceryshopping #nutrition

Hi friends! I know you are dying to know what’s been in my grocery cart lately. We missed June’s picks last month due to my website redesign. How do you guys like the new look? I am super in love with my new website and looking to continue to grow my business.

If you are not following already, make sure to follow me on Instagram. I share even more Grocery Store Finds there!

Wild Friends Nut Butter + Oats

Wild friends nut butter + oats

Wild Friends makes all different nut butters, but now they have stepped up their game to make breakfast even simpler. I typically always add nut butter to my oatmeal. Now Wild Friends have on the go oatmeal cups with a packet of nut butter packaged with it! What is fun about these on-go-oat cups is you can turn it into an oatmeal muffin right in the microwave by adding an egg, mashed banana, and a splash of milk. The oatmeal is low in added sugar with the peanut butter adds an extra protein punch. Definitely a great quick and easy breakfast.

YQ by Yoplait

YQ coconut yogurt by yoplait

Another new yogurt has hit the shelves of the grocery store. I always like trying new yogurts so I can recommend various brands to clients based on their preferences. This is a great yogurt for someone who is looking for that extra boost of protein but not the biggest fan of traditional Greek yogurt, maybe because of it’s tartness, consistency, etc. Everyone has different preferences. YQ by Yoplait is ultra-filtered milk, packed with protein and has less sugar than traditional yogurt. “YQ starts with ultra-filtered milk, which is milk that has been filtered through a small sieve to concentrate the amount of protein while removing much of the milk’s sugar, or lactose. Lactose is a naturally occurring sugar that adds virtually no sweetness. The ultra-filtered milk is then combined with active cultures and goes through a special churning technique, perfected by Yoplait in France. The result is a differential nutritional profile without the tart tang or chalky aftertaste of Greek-style yogurts.” (source) They come in a variety of flavors. Right now, the coconut flavor is in the lead for my favorite flavor at the moment.

GoodBelly Probiotic Crunch Bar

Good Belly probiotic crunchybar

GoodBelly Probiotic Crunchy Bars haven’t officially hit the shelves of all grocery stores just yet, but be on the lookout. GoodBelly was kind enough to let me try them before they came to the grocery stores in my area. Each crunchy bar has 1 Billion probiotics. I’m sure you’ve been hearing all the buzz about gut health, probiotics, and prebiotics. I’m glad it’s getting all of this attention because 70% of the body’s immune system is connected to the digestive tract, a properly functioning digestive system is essential to maintaining overall health. GoodBelly Bar contains Bifidobacterium lactis (BB12). This strain has been researched to have the ability to survive the stomach’s harsh acidic environment in order to set up shop in the intestines and may support gut health when consumed daily as part of a healthy diet and lifestyle. I usually always prefer the chocolate + peanut butter combo, but I actually liked the honey almond butter flavor better!

Rx Nut Butter

Rx vanilla almond butter

Rx Bar is known for their, well bars, but now have expanded their line to protein-packed nut butter. I like how Rx bars and their nut butters use real food to boost protein and add sweetness instead of fillers and added sugars. These nut butter packets are great for on the go and traveling. I always have one packed in my bag ready to be paired with a piece of fruit or added to my oatmeal. Just make sure to knead the package a little before as natural separation may occur.

Wtrmln Wtr

Wtrmln Wtr

Wtrmln Wtr (aka. Watermelon Water) is cold-pressured juiced watermelon. The concept of this product was originally created for finding a way to use discarded melons, just because they weren’t perfect enough to put on the grocery store shelves and farmers were able to turn a loss into a profit. Why discard an otherwise perfect watermelon? This beverage in my cart after a really tough spin class and I was feeling dehydrated and was looking for something to replenish my electrolytes rather than a sports drink with added sugar (or artificial sweeteners). One serving of watermelon juice naturally contains 550 mg of potassium. Yes, you could just eat watermelon, but I don’t know about you, I usually toss out the rind when I’m done munching on my slice, but the rind contains important L-citrulline which can help with muscle recovery. You can always pickle watermelon rinds, but the rind pressed in with the juice makes it much easier to consume. Wtrmln Wtr also comes in other watermelon flavor blends. I personally preferred the original over the watermelon lemonade I bought that day, but I am super interested in trying the watermelon blood orange flavor.

As always, I am always open to suggestions and Grocery Store Finds recommendations to look out for! Send me a message of your favorite Grocery Store Finds!

Grocery Store Finds: May 2018 (ALDI Edition)

Grocery Store Finds with Chef Julie Harrington, RD @ChefJulie_RD
You asked. I answered. Many requested a Grocery Store Finds post from the aisles of ALDI. Since there is not an ALDI near me, I honestly have never shopped there before. I’m always super jealous when I see other bloggers or Instagram friends sharing their budget-friendly ALDI finds. One dietitian friend, in particular, Sally Kuzemchak, of Real Mom Nutrition, is often sharing her grocery store finds from ALDI, I reached out to her to help me create an ALDI round-up to share with you today.
Sally Kuzemchak, MS, RD, is a registered dietitian, educator, and mom of two who blogs at Real Mom Nutrition, a “no-judgments zone” all about feeding a family. You can follow her on FacebookTwitterPinterest, and Instagram.
Take it away Sally..
Sally Kuzemchak - Real Mom Nutrition
If you haven’t already noticed, ALDI has developed something of a cult following. But for as huge as their fan base has become and for as many ALDI stores that are opening up across the country, I still meet people who are surprised by what you can find there—like organic milk and eggs, grass-fed beef, 100% maple syrup, organic coconut oil, quinoa, chia and hemp seeds, tubs of steel cut oats, fresh fruits and vegetables (including organic), and fresh salmon.
And that’s exactly what I’ve always loved about ALDI: They make healthy eating affordable and accessible to everyone, even if you’re on a budget. There’s no doubt my money goes much further at ALDI than it does at other grocery stores. And because ALDI has fewer aisles than most supermarkets, I’m in an out and done with my shopping in much less time. I love that!
Here are some of my current favorites:

Simply Nature Knock Your Sprouts Off Bread

Grocery Store Finds: Aldi's Edition
Sprouted grains products are made with whole grain seeds that have just sprouted. That boosts many of the nutrients and even makes them easier for some people to digest. But a lot of sprouted grain breads are super-pricey. This one isn’t!

Specially Selected Brown Basmati Rice

 Grocery Store Finds: Aldi's Edition
ALDI has several different rice varieties, but this is a pantry staple I keep on hand for serving with Indian dishes (note: you can also get naan bread at ALDI too!) or stir-fries. It’s got two grams of fiber per serving and cooks in less time than regular brown rice.

Elevation Peanut Butter Cookie Pure & Simple Bar

Grocery Store Finds: Aldi's Edition
A dead ringer for Larabars. They’ve got just four ingredients: dates, peanuts, peanut meal, and sea salt. They’re also available in Apple Pie flavor.

liveGfree Gluten Free Multiseed Snack Crackers Grocery Store Finds: Aldi's Edition

I don’t eat gluten-free but happily munch on these crispy crackers anyway. ALDI has a line of gluten-free products under their brand liveGfree that includes snacks, pasta, baking mixes, mac-n-cheese, and frozen foods.

Casa Mamita Taco Shells

 Grocery Store Finds: Aldi's Edition
My 13-year-old lives for tacos. But a lot of taco shells have long lists of ingredients. This one only has three: ground yellow corn, vegetable oil, and lime.
For more ideas, grab my free printable list of the best healthy foods to buy at ALDI.
Disclosure: Sally is a member of the ALDI Advisory Council and does some paid projects for them throughout the year but was not compensated to write this post.

Aldi's Grocery Store Finds @julieharringtonRD #Aldi #budgetfriendly #groceries

Grocery Store Finds: April 2018

There are thousands of different products that you can find in just one grocery store. We all have our grocery store “routes” but you may be passing by some really great items. That’s why I love writing these Grocery Store Finds articles. I love finding new products to share with you from the view of a Registered Dietitian. Grocery Store Finds via RDelicious Kitchen @RD_Kitchen #grocerystorefinds #rdchat #rdapproved #healthy
I’ve gotten a few questions about my grocery store finds posts, regarding that many of the items are packaged products. Yes, that is correct. Majority of these products are packaged products. What you don’t see is my cart also filled with plenty of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, etc. I will keep in mind to show some of the other things I pick up, like the wholesale pack of pre-portioned salmon I always get when it’s on sale. In a perfect world, I would have all the time to really cook everything from scratch. When we here the term “processed” in regards to food has a many thinking of the generalization that all processed foods are unhealthy. It’s a little more complex than that.
That wholesale pre-portioned salmon I just mentioned? Guess what – That’s technically “processed”. Someone or a machine sliced those pieces of salmon and placed them into individual vacuum sealed bags. The frozen broccoli in your freezer – processed. The canned beans sitting in your pantry – processed.
The standard overall nutrition message is often, eat more whole foods and limit processed foods. I think there should be a little asterisk by processed foods. In that sentence that really refers to ultra-processed foods. Learn more about what that means in Huffington Posts article: “Not all processed foods are bad for you. How they’re made matters.”

Grocery Store Finds from a Registered Dietitian @julieharringtonrd Kodiak Cakes, Power Waffles, Protein Packed Power Waffles

Kodiak Power Waffles:

My love for Kodiak Cakes has expanded along with their new product line, Power Waffles. Skip the frozen waffles made with refined grains and added sugars that will result in a mid-morning energy crash. Enjoy your toaster waffle but with 100% whole grains and high-quality protein that will be filling and satisfying. I skip the syrup and spread peanut butter on mine!
Grocery Store Finds from a Registered Dietitian @julieharringtonrd Cabot Seriously Sharp Shredded Cheese
Cabot Shredded Cheese:
Of course, I choose products based on their taste and overall nutrition value, but also the brand’s story plays an important role. 100% of Cabot’s profits for back to the farmers to produce delicious cheese and practice sustainability. The shredded cheese makes it convenient for delicious quesadillas.
Grocery Store Finds from a Registered Dietitian @julieharringtonrd Nourish Snacks Sea Salt Ancient Grain Crisps

Nourish Snacks Ancient Grain Crisps:

Remember I told you about Nourish Snacks before? They have developed a new line of Ancient Grain Crisps. Through Food and Nutrition Magazine I was able to try these crisps before they even hit the grocery store shelves during National Nutrition Month. Right now, they come in three flavors: Sea Salt, Texas BBQ, and White Cheddar. The ancient grain crisps use a blend of whole grain sorghum, quinoa, millet, brown rice, chia & hemp seeds.  I’ve been dunking my crisps into hummus for a delicious snack. I am definitely keeping my eyes peeled for the other flavors to try.
Grocery Store Finds from a Registered Dietitian @julieharringtonrd Manitoba Milling Co. Smooth Whole-Milled Flaxseed

Mantibo Milling Co. Smooth Whole-Milled Flaxseed:

Mantibo Milling Co. Smooth Whole-Milled Flaxseed is not your average flaxseed. It is fully ground into a smooth powder. This process maintains 100% of the nutritional value of flaxseed, whereas the oil crushing process of traditional flaxseed meal loses some of these nutrients. Flaxseed is an excellent source of ALA Omega-3’s, that are essential fats—the body can’t make them from scratch but must get them from food. Omega-3 fats have been shown to help prevent heart disease and stroke, may help control lupus, eczema, and rheumatoid arthritis, and may play protective roles in cancer and other conditions. Since this flaxseed is very smooth almost like flour, I was able to replace flour with ground flaxseed in my Sweet Potato Flax Waffles recipe.
Grocery Store Finds from a Registered Dietitian @julieharringtonrd Good Culture Pineapple Cottage Cheese

Good Culture Cottage Cheese:

I am on a total cottage cheese kick right now. Cottage cheese has just as much and sometimes even more than Greek yogurt. Good culture cottage cheese is thicker and creamier than other cottage cheese brands. It has been my afternoon snack for two weeks straight. I just love how tasty and filling it is. My favorite (right now) is the pineapple cottage cheese combo, and their other flavors are quite tasty too, including Strawberry Chia, Blueberry Acai Chia, and Mango; along with their traditional plain cottage cheese. They also have a savory kalamata olive flavor, which is great too. That flavor, I’ve added roasted red peppers, avocado, and hard-boiled eggs for a protein-packed breakfast.

Pamela’s Nut Flour Blend offers a unique variety of almond meal, coconut flour, pecan flour and walnut flour making it a great source of fiber and protein.I often use coconut flour and almond flour in my recipe creations. I love the idea of adding pecan flour and walnut flour. I’ve never tried either of those before. The blend is free from grains, gluten, dairy, soy, egg, and corn making it vegan and paleo-friendly and a pantry staple for specialty-diets. The Nut Flour Blend can be used in a variety of ways from simple breading to pie crusts, smoothie bowls, yogurt toppings and more! Stay tuned for a recipe that used this flour. I’ve been playing around with one, but I think I can make it better. Make sure to check back!

Trader Joe’s Corn & Chile Tomato-less Salsa has become a staple in my pantry. It’s delicious to simply eat with chips, but we like adding as a topping for our taco nights. It’s sweet with a hint of spice.

Chickpea Crumbs

Watusee Chickpea Crumbs are amazing and can be used like any other breadcrumb, but adds extra nutritional benefit with simply one ingredient – chickpeas. The texture is more of a coarse texture like panko breadcrumbs. I’ve breaded chicken cutlets with these chickpea breadcrumbs and baked in the oven.

There are so many bars lined up on the grocery store shelves. It can get confusing. I like to highlight bars on my grocery store finds posts because many clients do ask me which ones I recommend. Before I recommend any bars, I always recommend real food first. I love this new line of KIND bars. The first ingredient always comes from a nutritionally-dense whole food – almonds or peanuts. I was so excited when KIND sent over these samples to try! Each bar contains 12 grams of protein each.

GT came out with a new flavor this winter – Pure Love. It contains blood orange, hibiscus, and rose. It has a definite floral taste. I was a little taken aback at first, but then the flavor grew on me. I love adding a new flavor to my kombucha rotation.

For quite a while acai was known as THE superfood. While all fruits and vegetables contain phytonutrients that have superfood elements, acai was touted for its high amounts of antioxidants that can help build up your immune system and protect your cells against damage from free radicals. Fresh acai berries are not regularly available in grocery stores. I found these frozen packs and have been adding them to my smoothies. It turns a deep dark purple shade.

The Good Bean: Crispy Favas + Peas

The Good Bean just came out with a new line with fava beans and peas. The original line with chickpeas is still growing with new flavors. I was excited when they reached out to me to see if I wanted to try their new line – of course, my answer was yes! One serving contains 7 grams of plant proteins and 3 grams of fiber. To make their crispy favas and green peas, they soak them raw, then quickly crisp them with a spritz of coconut oil to retain the crunch. They are vegan-friendly, gluten-free, non-GMO, high protein, high fiber, and low fat. I’m slightly obsessed with the balsamic herb flavor. I’ve been adding them on top of my salads for a crunch.
