Grocery Store Finds: May 2019

Take a look at what grocery store finds ended up in this dietitian’s cart this month.

Grocery Store Finds with Chef Julie Harrington, RD @ChefJulie_RD

How it already the end of May? This month has been quite a whirlwind. I was working on a bunch of recipe development projects which had me at the grocery store almost every other day, but I was laser-focused on the items that I needed to grab for the recipes. A few other items did end up in my grocery cart that has helped me get through this hectic month that I think you’ll enjoy!

Quaker Overnight Oats

Grocery Store Finds via Chef Julie Harrington, RD @ChefJulie_RD #dietitian #personalshopper #healthy #rdapproved

Yes, it is very easy to make your own overnight oats, but I give an A+ for convenience. Rolling into the summer months means a lot of road trips, vacations, and weekend adventures. Having a quick and easy breakfast will save you money instead of eating out but also start your day with something hearty and with long-lasting energy. They do have flavored varieties, but I like sticking to the unsweetened with chia seeds. I like to pair with a travel pack nut/seed butter and some fruit.

Carrington Farms Flax Chia Packets

Grocery Store Finds via Chef Julie Harrington, RD @ChefJulie_RD #dietitian #personalshopper #healthy #rdapproved

Speaking about traveling and being on the go, these Carrington Farms Flax Chia packets are a simple way to include heart-healthy omega-3s and fiber into your day. I always have a couple of these in my purse. Sprinkle or mix in with just about anything. (You can even sprinkle it into the oatmeal above!)

Wild Planet Wild Sockeye Salmon

Grocery Store Finds via Chef Julie Harrington, RD @ChefJulie_RD #dietitian #personalshopper #healthy #rdapproved

Looking to incorporate more seafood into your diet? Eating seafood two to three times per week reduces the risk of death from any health-related cause by 17 percent. Wild Planet’s sockeye salmon is canned fresh upon catch (rather than being frozen before canning), which results in superior flavor and texture. Top on a salad for lunch, turn into salmon cakes or enjoy with crackers. This is an affordable and convenient way to incorporate more seafood.

HI! Happy Inside Cereal

Grocery Store Finds via Chef Julie Harrington, RD @ChefJulie_RD #dietitian #personalshopper #healthy #rdapproved

Happy Inside is a cereal that supports digestive wellness with a 3-in-1 medley of prebiotics, probiotics, and fiber. In combination with new research, The WK Kellogg Institute for Food and Nutrition spent two years researching the microbiome, and realized probiotics alone aren’t enough. That’s why they created HI! Happy Inside, plant-based breakfast foods and snacks crafted with prebiotics, probiotics, and fiber. I like to enjoy this cereal with milk or on top of yogurt.

Grocery Store Finds: April 2019

Take a look at what grocery store finds ended up in this dietitian’s cart this month.

Grocery Store Finds with Chef Julie Harrington, RD @ChefJulie_RD

I cheated a little for this Grocery Store Finds round-up. This month I had the amazing opportunity to present at the 2nd Annual Culinary Nutrition Conference.

They put together awesome goodie bags for all the presenters and participants and I’m showcasing a few new items that were provided that I really enjoyed and I think you’ll like too!

Simply Organic Pre-Brew Coffee Spices

Grocery Store Finds via Chef Julie Harrington, RD @ChefJulie_RD #dietitian #personalshopper #healthy #rdapproved

Looking to add a little more flavor to your morning cup of joe? Simply Organic now makes a pre-brew coffee chai spice blend. The combination of cinnamon, cardamom, and ginger is a delicious addition to coffee. It’s like sipping on specialty coffee from a cafe in the comfort of your own home. Just simply add the pre-brew coffee spices to the coffee grounds and brew your coffee as you usually would. Mornings just got a little more exciting!

BuckWHAT! Noshes

Grocery Store Finds via Chef Julie Harrington, RD @ChefJulie_RD #dietitian #personalshopper #healthy #rdapproved

Buck…WHAT? These little noshes are buckwheat super snacks. Using whole grain buckwheat as the base adds protein, fiber, zinc, and manganese. And, it’s low on the glycemic scale so it keeps you feeling fuller longer. Naturally gluten-free and with no sugar added, these are a great grab and go snack.

Kosterina Olive Oil

Grocery Store Finds via Chef Julie Harrington, RD @ChefJulie_RD #dietitian #personalshopper #healthy #rdapproved

I had the pleasure of cooking with Kosterina Extra Virgin Olive Oil at the Culinary Nutrition Conference and learned a lot about this particular brand. Kosterina olive oil is cold pressed from early harvest olives, called “agourelio” in Greek, which means the olives are collected when green and raw. The higher chlorophyll content in unripe olives makes the oil greener and richer in healthy polyphenols.

Did you know? Olive oil must have a polyphenol content of 55mg/kgto be considered Extra Virgin. Kosterina olive oil has polyphenol content of more than 400 mg/kg!

Sweet Chili Pistachios

Grocery Store Finds via Chef Julie Harrington, RD @ChefJulie_RD #dietitian #personalshopper #healthy #rdapproved

You might be thinking .. pistachios, that’s nothing new. But have you tried the sweet chili flavor? I am not a huge fan of too much spice but the sweet and spicy is balanced perfectly. Warning: they are addicting. Good thing they come in this portioned-controlled pack for a heart-healthy snack.

Have you tried any of these products before? I’d love to hear your thoughts. Comment below!

Grocery Store Finds: March 2019

Take a look at what grocery store finds ended up in this dietitian’s cart this month.

Grocery Store Finds with Chef Julie Harrington, RD @ChefJulie_RD

Do you feel like the months are flying by? For me, January felt like an eternity, but now February and March flew by. I’m okay with it because the consistently warmer weather is in the near future. Right now, New Jersey can’t make up its mind. Yesterday I was bundled up in my winter jacket and today I’m in capris and a windbreaker.

Gourmet Garden Lightly Dried Herbs

I like using fresh herbs in my recipes, but often times I buy a full bunch and the leftovers go bad waiting to be used in the refrigerator. My pantry is stocked with dried herbs, but sometimes a recipe or a garnish needs a pop of freshness at the end. Enter: Gourmet Gardens Lightly Dried Herbs. First off, they are already chopped, so that’s a timesaver right there. Also, being lightly dried, they can last up to 4 weeks in the refrigerator after opened.

Quaker Oat Beverage

There are so many dairy-free milk alternatives on the shelves of the grocery store and stores are making room now for oat milk. Even coffee shops are offering oat milk lattes. Like most plant-based milk (besides soy milk), it does not meet the protein mark like regular cow’s milk does but does serve as a lower calorie option with the added benefit of 4 grams of fiber per cup. This oat milk does have an edge up compared to other dairy-free milk alternatives, is that it is very creamy and can be used whereever you would use cow’s milk.

Cauliflower Crackers

Cauliflower is literally made into everything these days. I was intrigued by these as I feel like they are trying to be a “healthier” Cheez-It. Using various plant-based flours as the base, the cheesy flavor is there, but there is a distinct cauliflower aftertaste. But alas, in my opinion, not as good as the real deal. Both are still a processed snack, so enjoy along with a balanced diet. Try them and let me know what you think!

Dave’s Killer Bread English Muffins

When I was a retail dietitian, I had the opportunity to learn about Dave’s Killer Bread when it first hit the grocery store shelves. Learning about their brand story, I felt passionate about their mission. Bonus, their bread is absolutely delicious! It’s been great seeing their brand grow with new product lines, with bread to bagels and now English muffins.

Nohmad Chocolate

I’m a sucker for chocolate. This was a definite impulse purchase as I was killing time strolling through the store, after the store making an announcement that their credit card machines were down. Made with maple sugar, each bite definitely has a subtle maple flavor. My favorite part was the crunchy coffee bean bits. At $5.99 per bar, I think I’ll wait for a coupon to try one of their other flavors. I think next I want to try their creamy coconut chocolate.

Grocery Store Finds: December 2018

Grocery Store Finds with Chef Julie Harrington, RD @ChefJulie_RD

While December is full of holiday parties and gatherings, I was still sticking to my normal grocery shopping routine. For 2019, I want to hear from you! What products should I be on the lookout for? What new items are being added to your grocery carts? Don’t hesitate to shoot me an email, or message on my Instagram or Facebook.

Dole Açaí Bowls

hand holding dole acai bowls

Skip the $12.00 açaí bowls out when you can enjoy them at home. Dole’s Açaí Bowls are perfectly portioned. The original bowl is a blend of açaí, bananas, and honey topped with strawberries, blueberries, honey oat granola, and coconut at only 210 calories per bowl. Açaí is incredibly rich in antioxidants, boasting three times the amount found in blueberries. So next, time skip the line at the playa bowl shop and stock up on these açaí bowls at home.

Whisps Parmesan Cheese Crisps

hand holding whisps parmesan cheese

These Whisp’s Parmesan Cheese Crips are simple parmesan cheese melted into little disks. If you are looking for a low-carb savory snack, these are for you! I dunked these into hummus and crumbled them on top of my salad. I mean, who doesn’t love cheese?

Green Giant
Cauliflower Crust Pizza

hand holding green giant cauliflower pizza crust

There are so many cauliflower crusts out there to choose from. I always want you to flip over the package at look at the ingredient list. I’m calling out some of the “cauliflower” crust imposters. I mean, if you are going to call it a cauliflower crust, cauliflower should be the first ingredient. (Note: ingredients are listed from most dense to least dense, meaning whatever the majority of the product is made up of is listed from first to last.) Green Giant’s Cauliflower Crust’s ingredients are: Cauliflower, Rice Flour, Corn Starch, Corn Flour, Cornmeal, Canola Oil, Salt, Black Pepper. Plus, this product is listed as one of Good Housekeeping’s Nutritionists Approved items.

Organic Girl White Cheddar
Ranch Style Dressing

hand holding organic girl white cheddar vinaigrette

While I usually make my own dressings, I do keep a few bottled dressings on hand. When looking for a pre-made dressing, I check the ingredient list, to make sure there are not a ton of fillers or artificial ingredients. I like Organic Girls white cheddar ranch-style dressing because of their ingredient list and of course the taste. Dunk these in oven-baked chicken wings. You can thank me later.

Dorot Chopped Basil

hand holding dorot chopped basil

If you have more of a black thumb like me, Dorot’s frozen herbs are awesome to keep stocked in your freezer. Simply pop out an herb pod and add to a recipe. They also have minced garlic!

Now let’s get shopping!

Grocery Store Finds: November 2018

Grocery Store Finds with Chef Julie Harrington, RD @ChefJulie_RD #dietitian #healthy #grocerystore #groceryshopping #nutrition

With the holiday season rolling in very fast, I try my best to stick to my normal eating patterns in between Thanksgiving and Christmas. That doesn’t stop me from finding new items on the shelves to try! Spend a little extra time next time you are at the grocery store. You may find some new items that may become staples in your kitchen.

Maple Vinegar

—————

hand holding the maple guild maple vinegar

I stumbled upon this maple vinegar when I was shopping at whole foods. My favorite vinaigrette combination is olive oil, white balsamic vinegar, and maple syrup. I was shopping to restock my white balsamic vinegar stash in the pantry and I came across this maple vinegar. The Maple Guild is known for their premium maple syrup. They have pioneered a new way to make their syrup, by Steam-Crafting™. Instead of using direct heat to boil the maple sap, they steam-heat it, resulting in a velvety, Grade A Golden syrup that reveals all the nuance of real maple flavor. Their maple sap is naturally fermented and aged in California wine barrels creating a craft premium vinegar. I can’t wait to experiment with different dressing and marinade recipes.

Siggi’s Simple Sides

—————

hand holding Siggi's Simple Sides - honey skyr with dried figs and walnuts

If you have been reading my Grocery Store Finds for a while now, you know my love for Siggi’s. Siggi’s is an Icelandic style cream-skyr. True to Icelandic tradition, Siggi’s products do not contain any artificial preservatives, thickeners, sweeteners, flavors or colors, and are made with milk from family farms who do not use growth hormones such as rBGH. Siggi’s dairy is fully committed to making rather delicious yogurt products with simple ingredients and not a lot of sugar, always. Now, they have fun wholesome sides right attached to stir in. You can find them right next to the other Siggi’s varieties in the dairy section of your grocery store.

Jada Spices Turmeric Salt

—————

hand holding Jada Spices turmeric salt

Jada Spices are vegan turmeric-based all-purpose seasoning salts. Turmeric is known for its powerful anti-inflammatory benefits. This blend contains black pepper, as studies have shown, help absorb curcumin. Adding this spice blend to chicken adds a pop of color and flavor. You can find these on Amazon.

Health-Ade Bubbly Rose

—————

Bubbly Rose Health-Ade via Chef Julie Harrington, RD @chefJulie_RD #rose #kombucha #probiotics

Health-Ade has a new flavor – Bubbly Rose! Health-Ade is the only commercial kombucha fermented 100% in glass to prevent plastic and metal leaching and it’s hand-crafted in super-small 2.5-gallon batches for premium quality. Kombucha is fermented tea, that naturally contains probiotics, which is great for gut health. The bubbly rose flavor uses a fruity and tart superfood blend featuring refreshingly delicious flavors including hawthorn berry, mangosteen, and pink rose. Follow your gut and try Health-Ade.

Simple Mills Soft Baked Cookies

—————

hand holding simple mills soft baked dark chocolate toasted coconut cookies

Soft baked cookies – do I need to say more? What set’s these cookies apart is their ingredient list. Simple Mills Soft Baked are made with nutrient-dense almond flour and smartly sweetened with honey and coconut sugar. Thanks to these natural sweeteners, they contain 25% less sugar than our natural cookie counterparts. Dunk the dark chocolate toasted coconut cookies in hot chocolate. Thank me later.

Grocery Store Finds: September 2018

There are so many new products hitting the shelves soon. This dietitian has the inside scoop.

Grocery Store Finds with Chef Julie Harrington, RD @ChefJulie_RD #dietitian #healthy #grocerystore #groceryshopping #nutrition

This is the first-ever Grocery Store Finds post, where I haven’t actually tried the products yet myself. Last month was Expo East and was hoping to get there, but my schedule was already booked with cooking classes and other events. I vicariously was following the #expoeast on Instagram and seeing all these new products that were announced and soon to hit the shelves if they haven’t already.

Maybe it’s the dietitian in me, but when I see a new product, I am intrigued. Some of these brands you probably have heard of before, but they are expanding their product lines with new items.

Wild Friends Nut Butter with Collagen

—————-

Wild Friends with Collagen Peptides

(@wild_friends)

Wild Friends partnered with Vital Proteins, makers of high-quality, grass-fed collagen products, to make these nutrient-dense nut butter. Why did they choose collagen? Collagen is a vital building block of our hair, skin, nails, bones, and joints. Our bodies naturally produce collagen, but as we age, the production decreases. Incorporating collagen into your diet can encourage natural collagen production and has been shown to promote healthy cartilage, joint and bone health, skin tone and elasticity, increased athletic performance, gut health, and deeper sleep. One serving of Wild Friends Collagen Nut Butter packs in 8 grams of protein per serving. The second I see this in my grocery store, it will for sure end up in my cart.

Chosen Foods Vegan Mayo

—————-

Chosen Foods Vegan Mayo

Vegan mayo? How is that even possible. Right on the jar, it says that it is made with avocado oil, but that is liquid. I did a little research and found out how they make a spreadable consistency. The magic is aquafaba! Aquafaba is the liquid leftover from soaking or cooking garbanzo beans. The water absorbs proteins and starches from the beans, becoming more viscous along the way. Its viscosity is similar to that of eggs and egg whites, making aquafaba the perfect egg substitute. Chosen Foods blends aquafaba with avocado oil, to create a 100% vegan mayo that can truly be described as plant-based. Use this mayo as you normally would – on sandwiches, wraps, or as a base for sauces and dressings.

Health Warrior Protein Muffin

—————

Health Warrior Protein Muffin

(@healthwarrior)

A protein muffin made in 60 seconds – I’m intrigued! I was very excited to see sorghum listed at the first ingredient. Sorghum is, a cereal grain native to Asia and Africa, that is naturally gluten-free, packed with protein and fiber, and full of antioxidants like policosanols. They use pumpkin seed protein to add extra protein for a quick and filling breakfast or snack.

Cece’s Veggie Noodle Co.

—————-

Cece's Veggie Noodle Co

(@cecesveggieco)

Cece’s Veggie Noodle Co. has expanded its line beyond veggie noodles. They now have rice varieties and veggie-packed meals. What I like about these are that they are fresh and super convenient. I don’t know about you, but have you ever tried spiralizing a beet? It looks like a murder scene on my cutting board. Take a short cut and utilize these conveniently prepped veggies.

Soozy’s Muffins

—————-

Soozy's Muffins

(@soozysmuffins)

Find Soozy’s Muffins in the frozen aisle. Soozy’s Muffins are made with all-natural, unprocessed ingredients, and are free from gluten, grains, soy, dairy, GMOs, fillers, stabilizers, and additives. Enjoy these muffins for breakfast, for dessert or as a snack. It’s convenient, easy, tasty, and goes well with your morning coffee, afternoon tea or a tall glass of milk at any time of the day.

Grocery Store Finds: May 2018 (ALDI Edition)

Grocery Store Finds with Chef Julie Harrington, RD @ChefJulie_RD
You asked. I answered. Many requested a Grocery Store Finds post from the aisles of ALDI. Since there is not an ALDI near me, I honestly have never shopped there before. I’m always super jealous when I see other bloggers or Instagram friends sharing their budget-friendly ALDI finds. One dietitian friend, in particular, Sally Kuzemchak, of Real Mom Nutrition, is often sharing her grocery store finds from ALDI, I reached out to her to help me create an ALDI round-up to share with you today.
Sally Kuzemchak, MS, RD, is a registered dietitian, educator, and mom of two who blogs at Real Mom Nutrition, a “no-judgments zone” all about feeding a family. You can follow her on FacebookTwitterPinterest, and Instagram.
Take it away Sally..
Sally Kuzemchak - Real Mom Nutrition
If you haven’t already noticed, ALDI has developed something of a cult following. But for as huge as their fan base has become and for as many ALDI stores that are opening up across the country, I still meet people who are surprised by what you can find there—like organic milk and eggs, grass-fed beef, 100% maple syrup, organic coconut oil, quinoa, chia and hemp seeds, tubs of steel cut oats, fresh fruits and vegetables (including organic), and fresh salmon.
And that’s exactly what I’ve always loved about ALDI: They make healthy eating affordable and accessible to everyone, even if you’re on a budget. There’s no doubt my money goes much further at ALDI than it does at other grocery stores. And because ALDI has fewer aisles than most supermarkets, I’m in an out and done with my shopping in much less time. I love that!
Here are some of my current favorites:

Simply Nature Knock Your Sprouts Off Bread

Grocery Store Finds: Aldi's Edition
Sprouted grains products are made with whole grain seeds that have just sprouted. That boosts many of the nutrients and even makes them easier for some people to digest. But a lot of sprouted grain breads are super-pricey. This one isn’t!

Specially Selected Brown Basmati Rice

 Grocery Store Finds: Aldi's Edition
ALDI has several different rice varieties, but this is a pantry staple I keep on hand for serving with Indian dishes (note: you can also get naan bread at ALDI too!) or stir-fries. It’s got two grams of fiber per serving and cooks in less time than regular brown rice.

Elevation Peanut Butter Cookie Pure & Simple Bar

Grocery Store Finds: Aldi's Edition
A dead ringer for Larabars. They’ve got just four ingredients: dates, peanuts, peanut meal, and sea salt. They’re also available in Apple Pie flavor.

liveGfree Gluten Free Multiseed Snack Crackers Grocery Store Finds: Aldi's Edition

I don’t eat gluten-free but happily munch on these crispy crackers anyway. ALDI has a line of gluten-free products under their brand liveGfree that includes snacks, pasta, baking mixes, mac-n-cheese, and frozen foods.

Casa Mamita Taco Shells

 Grocery Store Finds: Aldi's Edition
My 13-year-old lives for tacos. But a lot of taco shells have long lists of ingredients. This one only has three: ground yellow corn, vegetable oil, and lime.
For more ideas, grab my free printable list of the best healthy foods to buy at ALDI.
Disclosure: Sally is a member of the ALDI Advisory Council and does some paid projects for them throughout the year but was not compensated to write this post.

I don’t get to that store as often, but when I saw this on the shelves, I just had to buy it! The cashew butter with cardamom and chia seeds are out of this world! Pamela’s Nut Flour Blend

Grocery Store Finds from a Registered Dietitians via RDelicious Kitchen @RD_Kitchen #rdchat #rdapproved #wellness #supermarket #grocery #healthy #dietitian Pamela's Nut Flour Blend #glutenfree #nutflour #lowcarbI was super intrigued when Pamela’s reached out to see if I wanted to try their new nut flour blend. Pamela’s Nut Flour Blend offers a unique variety of almond meal, coconut flour, pecan flour and walnut flour making it a great source of fiber and protein.I often use coconut flour and almond flour in my recipe creations. I love the idea of adding pecan flour and walnut flour. I’ve never tried either of those before. The blend is free from grains, gluten, dairy, soy, egg, and corn making it vegan and paleo-friendly and a pantry staple for specialty-diets. The Nut Flour Blend can be used in a variety of ways from simple breading to pie crusts, smoothie bowls, yogurt toppings and more! Stay tuned for a recipe that used this flour. I’ve been playing around with one, but I think I can make it better. Make sure to check back!

Trader Joe’s Corn & Chile Tomato-less Salsa has become a staple in my pantry. It’s delicious to simply eat with chips, but we like adding as a topping for our taco nights. It’s sweet with a hint of spice.

Chickpea Crumbs

Watusee Chickpea Crumbs are amazing and can be used like any other breadcrumb, but adds extra nutritional benefit with simply one ingredient – chickpeas. The texture is more of a coarse texture like panko breadcrumbs. I’ve breaded chicken cutlets with these chickpea breadcrumbs and baked in the oven.

KIND Protein Bars

There are so many bars lined up on the grocery store shelves. It can get confusing. I like to highlight bars on my grocery store finds posts because many clients do ask me which ones I recommend. Before I recommend any bars, I always recommend real food first. I love this new line of KIND bars. The first ingredient always comes from a nutritionally-dense whole food – almonds or peanuts. I was so excited when KIND sent over these samples to try! Each bar contains 12 grams of protein each.

GT Kombucha: Pure Love Winter Edition

GT came out with a new flavor this winter – Pure Love. It contains blood orange, hibiscus, and rose. It has a definite floral taste. I was a little taken aback at first, but then the flavor grew on me. I love adding a new flavor to my kombucha rotation.

Sambazon Acai Berry & Guarana Packs

Grocery Store Finds from a Registered Dietitians via RDelicious Kitchen @RD_Kitchen #rdchat #rdapproved #wellness #supermarket #grocery #healthy #dietitian #Acai #superfood
For quite a while acai was known as THE superfood. While all fruits and vegetables contain phytonutrients that have superfood elements, acai was touted for its high amounts of antioxidants that can help build up your immune system and protect your cells against damage from free radicals. Fresh acai berries are not regularly available in grocery stores. I found these frozen packs and have been adding them to my smoothies. It turns a deep dark purple shade.

Pique Tea

The Good Bean just came out with a new line with fava beans and peas. The original line with chickpeas is still growing with new flavors. I was excited when they reached out to me to see if I wanted to try their new line – of course, my answer was yes! One serving contains 7 grams of plant proteins and 3 grams of fiber. To make their crispy favas and green peas, they soak them raw, then quickly crisp them with a spritz of coconut oil to retain the crunch. They are vegan-friendly, gluten-free, non-GMO, high protein, high fiber, and low fat. I’m slightly obsessed with the balsamic herb flavor. I’ve been adding them on top of my salads for a crunch.

I usually add a little splash of milk to my coffee in the morning, but this was the first time I could actually drink it completely black. It is very smooth and much less bitter. Puroast has 70 percent less acidity than any other coffee. My day doesn’t start without a cup of coffee.

Simple Mills, I don’t think you make a product I don’t like. I wish I could cook and bake everything from scratch, but let’s be real, I’m busy! I have no shame in my box mix game, especially when it’s packed with simple and wholesome ingredients. Simple and delicious!
