Grocery Store Finds: April 2019

Take a look at what grocery store finds ended up in this dietitian’s cart this month.

Grocery Store Finds with Chef Julie Harrington, RD @ChefJulie_RD

I cheated a little for this Grocery Store Finds round-up. This month I had the amazing opportunity to present at the 2nd Annual Culinary Nutrition Conference.

They put together awesome goodie bags for all the presenters and participants and I’m showcasing a few new items that were provided that I really enjoyed and I think you’ll like too!

Simply Organic Pre-Brew Coffee Spices

Grocery Store Finds via Chef Julie Harrington, RD @ChefJulie_RD #dietitian #personalshopper #healthy #rdapproved

Looking to add a little more flavor to your morning cup of joe? Simply Organic now makes a pre-brew coffee chai spice blend. The combination of cinnamon, cardamom, and ginger is a delicious addition to coffee. It’s like sipping on specialty coffee from a cafe in the comfort of your own home. Just simply add the pre-brew coffee spices to the coffee grounds and brew your coffee as you usually would. Mornings just got a little more exciting!

BuckWHAT! Noshes

Grocery Store Finds via Chef Julie Harrington, RD @ChefJulie_RD #dietitian #personalshopper #healthy #rdapproved

Buck…WHAT? These little noshes are buckwheat super snacks. Using whole grain buckwheat as the base adds protein, fiber, zinc, and manganese. And, it’s low on the glycemic scale so it keeps you feeling fuller longer. Naturally gluten-free and with no sugar added, these are a great grab and go snack.

Kosterina Olive Oil

Grocery Store Finds via Chef Julie Harrington, RD @ChefJulie_RD #dietitian #personalshopper #healthy #rdapproved

I had the pleasure of cooking with Kosterina Extra Virgin Olive Oil at the Culinary Nutrition Conference and learned a lot about this particular brand. Kosterina olive oil is cold pressed from early harvest olives, called “agourelio” in Greek, which means the olives are collected when green and raw. The higher chlorophyll content in unripe olives makes the oil greener and richer in healthy polyphenols.

Did you know? Olive oil must have a polyphenol content of 55mg/kgto be considered Extra Virgin. Kosterina olive oil has polyphenol content of more than 400 mg/kg!

Sweet Chili Pistachios

Grocery Store Finds via Chef Julie Harrington, RD @ChefJulie_RD #dietitian #personalshopper #healthy #rdapproved

You might be thinking .. pistachios, that’s nothing new. But have you tried the sweet chili flavor? I am not a huge fan of too much spice but the sweet and spicy is balanced perfectly. Warning: they are addicting. Good thing they come in this portioned-controlled pack for a heart-healthy snack.

Have you tried any of these products before? I’d love to hear your thoughts. Comment below!

Grocery Store Finds: December 2018

Grocery Store Finds with Chef Julie Harrington, RD @ChefJulie_RD

While December is full of holiday parties and gatherings, I was still sticking to my normal grocery shopping routine. For 2019, I want to hear from you! What products should I be on the lookout for? What new items are being added to your grocery carts? Don’t hesitate to shoot me an email, or message on my Instagram or Facebook.

Dole Açaí Bowls

hand holding dole acai bowls

Skip the $12.00 açaí bowls out when you can enjoy them at home. Dole’s Açaí Bowls are perfectly portioned. The original bowl is a blend of açaí, bananas, and honey topped with strawberries, blueberries, honey oat granola, and coconut at only 210 calories per bowl. Açaí is incredibly rich in antioxidants, boasting three times the amount found in blueberries. So next, time skip the line at the playa bowl shop and stock up on these açaí bowls at home.

Whisps Parmesan Cheese Crisps

hand holding whisps parmesan cheese

These Whisp’s Parmesan Cheese Crips are simple parmesan cheese melted into little disks. If you are looking for a low-carb savory snack, these are for you! I dunked these into hummus and crumbled them on top of my salad. I mean, who doesn’t love cheese?

Green Giant
Cauliflower Crust Pizza

hand holding green giant cauliflower pizza crust

There are so many cauliflower crusts out there to choose from. I always want you to flip over the package at look at the ingredient list. I’m calling out some of the “cauliflower” crust imposters. I mean, if you are going to call it a cauliflower crust, cauliflower should be the first ingredient. (Note: ingredients are listed from most dense to least dense, meaning whatever the majority of the product is made up of is listed from first to last.) Green Giant’s Cauliflower Crust’s ingredients are: Cauliflower, Rice Flour, Corn Starch, Corn Flour, Cornmeal, Canola Oil, Salt, Black Pepper. Plus, this product is listed as one of Good Housekeeping’s Nutritionists Approved items.

Organic Girl White Cheddar
Ranch Style Dressing

hand holding organic girl white cheddar vinaigrette

While I usually make my own dressings, I do keep a few bottled dressings on hand. When looking for a pre-made dressing, I check the ingredient list, to make sure there are not a ton of fillers or artificial ingredients. I like Organic Girls white cheddar ranch-style dressing because of their ingredient list and of course the taste. Dunk these in oven-baked chicken wings. You can thank me later.

Dorot Chopped Basil

hand holding dorot chopped basil

If you have more of a black thumb like me, Dorot’s frozen herbs are awesome to keep stocked in your freezer. Simply pop out an herb pod and add to a recipe. They also have minced garlic!

Now let’s get shopping!

Grocery Store Finds: November 2018

Grocery Store Finds with Chef Julie Harrington, RD @ChefJulie_RD #dietitian #healthy #grocerystore #groceryshopping #nutrition

With the holiday season rolling in very fast, I try my best to stick to my normal eating patterns in between Thanksgiving and Christmas. That doesn’t stop me from finding new items on the shelves to try! Spend a little extra time next time you are at the grocery store. You may find some new items that may become staples in your kitchen.

Maple Vinegar

—————

hand holding the maple guild maple vinegar

I stumbled upon this maple vinegar when I was shopping at whole foods. My favorite vinaigrette combination is olive oil, white balsamic vinegar, and maple syrup. I was shopping to restock my white balsamic vinegar stash in the pantry and I came across this maple vinegar. The Maple Guild is known for their premium maple syrup. They have pioneered a new way to make their syrup, by Steam-Crafting™. Instead of using direct heat to boil the maple sap, they steam-heat it, resulting in a velvety, Grade A Golden syrup that reveals all the nuance of real maple flavor. Their maple sap is naturally fermented and aged in California wine barrels creating a craft premium vinegar. I can’t wait to experiment with different dressing and marinade recipes.

Siggi’s Simple Sides

—————

hand holding Siggi's Simple Sides - honey skyr with dried figs and walnuts

If you have been reading my Grocery Store Finds for a while now, you know my love for Siggi’s. Siggi’s is an Icelandic style cream-skyr. True to Icelandic tradition, Siggi’s products do not contain any artificial preservatives, thickeners, sweeteners, flavors or colors, and are made with milk from family farms who do not use growth hormones such as rBGH. Siggi’s dairy is fully committed to making rather delicious yogurt products with simple ingredients and not a lot of sugar, always. Now, they have fun wholesome sides right attached to stir in. You can find them right next to the other Siggi’s varieties in the dairy section of your grocery store.

Jada Spices Turmeric Salt

—————

hand holding Jada Spices turmeric salt

Jada Spices are vegan turmeric-based all-purpose seasoning salts. Turmeric is known for its powerful anti-inflammatory benefits. This blend contains black pepper, as studies have shown, help absorb curcumin. Adding this spice blend to chicken adds a pop of color and flavor. You can find these on Amazon.

Health-Ade Bubbly Rose

—————

Health-Ade has a new flavor – Bubbly Rose! Health-Ade is the only commercial kombucha fermented 100% in glass to prevent plastic and metal leaching and it’s hand-crafted in super-small 2.5-gallon batches for premium quality. Kombucha is fermented tea, that naturally contains probiotics, which is great for gut health. Simple Mills Soft Baked Cookies

—————

Soft baked cookies – do I need to say more? What set’s these cookies apart is their ingredient list. Simple Mills Soft Baked are made with nutrient-dense almond flour and smartly sweetened with honey and coconut sugar. Thanks to these natural sweeteners, they contain 25% less sugar than our natural cookie counterparts. Dunk the dark chocolate toasted coconut cookies in hot chocolate. Thank me later.

Grocery Store Finds: September 2018

There are so many new products hitting the shelves soon. This dietitian has the inside scoop.

Grocery Store Finds with Chef Julie Harrington, RD @ChefJulie_RD #dietitian #healthy #grocerystore #groceryshopping #nutrition

This is the first-ever Grocery Store Finds post, where I haven’t actually tried the products yet myself. Last month was Expo East and was hoping to get there, but my schedule was already booked with cooking classes and other events. I vicariously was following the #expoeast on Instagram and seeing all these new products that were announced and soon to hit the shelves if they haven’t already.

Maybe it’s the dietitian in me, but when I see a new product, I am intrigued. Some of these brands you probably have heard of before, but they are expanding their product lines with new items.

Wild Friends Nut Butter with Collagen

—————-

Wild Friends with Collagen Peptides

(@wild_friends)

Wild Friends partnered with Vital Proteins, makers of high-quality, grass-fed collagen products, to make these nutrient-dense nut butter. Why did they choose collagen? Collagen is a vital building block of our hair, skin, nails, bones, and joints. Our bodies naturally produce collagen, but as we age, the production decreases. Incorporating collagen into your diet can encourage natural collagen production and has been shown to promote healthy cartilage, joint and bone health, skin tone and elasticity, increased athletic performance, gut health, and deeper sleep. One serving of Wild Friends Collagen Nut Butter packs in 8 grams of protein per serving. The second I see this in my grocery store, it will for sure end up in my cart.

Chosen Foods Vegan Mayo

—————-

Chosen Foods Vegan Mayo

Vegan mayo? How is that even possible. Right on the jar, it says that it is made with avocado oil, but that is liquid. I did a little research and found out how they make a spreadable consistency. The magic is aquafaba! Aquafaba is the liquid leftover from soaking or cooking garbanzo beans. The water absorbs proteins and starches from the beans, becoming more viscous along the way. Its viscosity is similar to that of eggs and egg whites, making aquafaba the perfect egg substitute. Chosen Foods blends aquafaba with avocado oil, to create a 100% vegan mayo that can truly be described as plant-based. Use this mayo as you normally would – on sandwiches, wraps, or as a base for sauces and dressings.

Health Warrior Protein Muffin

—————

Health Warrior Protein Muffin

(@healthwarrior)

A protein muffin made in 60 seconds – I’m intrigued! I was very excited to see sorghum listed at the first ingredient. Sorghum is, a cereal grain native to Asia and Africa, that is naturally gluten-free, packed with protein and fiber, and full of antioxidants like policosanols. They use pumpkin seed protein to add extra protein for a quick and filling breakfast or snack.

Cece’s Veggie Noodle Co.

—————-

Cece's Veggie Noodle Co

(@cecesveggieco)

Cece’s Veggie Noodle Co. has expanded its line beyond veggie noodles. They now have rice varieties and veggie-packed meals. What I like about these are that they are fresh and super convenient. I don’t know about you, but have you ever tried spiralizing a beet? It looks like a murder scene on my cutting board. Take a short cut and utilize these conveniently prepped veggies.

Soozy’s Muffins

—————-

Soozy's Muffins

(@soozysmuffins)

Find Soozy’s Muffins in the frozen aisle. Soozy’s Muffins are made with all-natural, unprocessed ingredients, and are free from gluten, grains, soy, dairy, GMOs, fillers, stabilizers, and additives. Enjoy these muffins for breakfast, for dessert or as a snack. It’s convenient, easy, tasty, and goes well with your morning coffee, afternoon tea or a tall glass of milk at any time of the day.

Grocery Store Finds: June 2017

Curious what ended up in my grocery cart this month?

I’m sure you’ve heard by now that Amazon has bought Whole Foods. What are your thoughts on the future of grocery shopping? I’m really intrigued of what’s to come!
This month I did most of my shopping at Whole Foods and Dean’s Natural Market. Any time I stroll through both of those stores, something new always ends up in my cart.

Grocery Store Finds: RD approved Health-Ade

My birthday is in June and Dean’s helped me celebrate my birthday all month with 1/2 off Health-Ade ALL MONTH. This is hands down my favorite kombucha. I am still on the hunt for the Blood Orange-Carrot-Ginger and Reishi Chocolate flavors. Follow your gut and try Health-Ade. Health-Ade is the only commercial kombucha fermented 100% in glass to prevent plastic and metal leaching and it’s hand-crafted in super-small 2.5 gallon batches for premium quality. Kombucha is fermented tea, that naturally contains probiotics, which is great for gut health.

Grocery Store Finds: RD approved - Barney Butter

Barney Butter

I was lucky to win Joy, Food, Sunshine’s Barney Butter contest. I was SO excited when this package arrived at my doorstep. I am a true nut butter lover. There is pretty much not a day without nut butter being part of a meal of snack. Each almond butter blend packs in a ton of flavor without a ton of added sugar. Barney Butter is regularly available in grocery stores. I just got my hands on their single serve packs. Perfect for traveling!
Grocery Store Finds: RD approved - Jar Goods

Jar Goods

I don’t buy marinara very often because my family always makes it from scratch and there is always some stored in my freezer, but I was completely out! When I was strolling the aisles at Dean’s this jar caught my eye because it was locally (to me) made in Hoboken, NJ. Made with simple ingredients, this packs in great flavor. It’s not grandma’s gravy, but I will definitely be buying again.
Grocery Store Finds: RD approved - Hippeas

Hippeas

Have you seen Hippeas? I was craving a crunchy snack and these chickpea puffs were pretty good. They reminded me of a healthier Cheeto. I cannot even remember the last time I ate one of those. The white cheddar flavor was subtle, but it curbed my crunchy snack craving. I think it’s pretty cool companies are finding creative ways to add more pulses into foods.
Grocery Store Finds: RD approved - BRM to-go

Bob’s Red Mill

Bob’s Red Mill never fails me. I love these little to-go cups with no sugar added and it has flax and chia already added in. These have been lifesavers for eating on the go and also for traveling. Pair with some fruit and a PB packet, you have yourself a filling meal.

Build a Better Taco + 25 Taco Recipe Ideas from Registered Dietitians

Did you know October 4th is National Taco Day? Learn to build a better taco and celebrate with making one of these RD approved taco recipes created by Registered Dietitians.
Build a Better Taco + 25 Taco Recipe Ideas from Registered Dietitians via RDelicious Kitchen @RD_Kitchen
To successfully build a better taco you have to start from the bottom and build up. Each layer is important and can be made a little healthier on taco night.
Start with your tortillas.
The big debate – soft or hard shell. That’s really up to you. Opt to use whole grain tortillas. Not into the shell, no worries! Try making a Veggie Loaded Taco Dip and dunk with a bean-based chip. Another option is to add more fiber and use large leaf lettuce to hold your taco filling.
Choose your filling.
Great creative with healthy fillings. First add some protein. If you choose beef, choose a lean ground beef.
If you pick chicken or turkey, look for ground chicken or turkey breast. This is ensuring that is ground from all white breast meat, making it a leaner choice.
Try seafood! Many varieties of seafood work well with tacos. Seafood is lean option. If you like a firmer texture, try using salmon, shrimp, or scallops. For a flakier texture, use tilapia, haddock, or catfish.
Looking for plant-based proteins? Try beans, lentils, tofu, or tempeh.
Plus, pump up your tacos with plenty of veggies. Think beyond the traditional lettuce, tomato, and avocado. Add roasted squashes, sautéed kale, broccoli slaw or a peach salsa. The possibilities are endless!
Make your own taco seasoning for a lower-sodium option for your taco filling.
Add your toppings.
After you loaded your taco with healthy fillings, top it with some more flavor! Add a fresh salsa, guacamole, and/or Greek yogurt. Plain Greek yogurt can be substituted for sour cream for a leaner choice and a boost of protein.

Supermarket RD’s Pick: Vermont Bread Company Whole Wheat Bread

There are so many options of sliced bread in the aisles at the grocery store, so which one do you choose? Vermont Bread Company is one of my top choices, making this a Supermarket RD’s Pick.

Supermarket RD's Pick - Dietitian approved items that you can find in the grocery store! #rdchatThe whole grain bread conundrum can get very confusing for shoppers as they walk down the aisles looking at all the different kinds of sliced bread. Sitting next to each other on the shelves are whole wheat bread, whole grain bread, multi grain bread, 15 grain bread, light whole wheat bread, etc. They are all brown in color, so they must all be a healthy choice, right? Wrong!
Supermarket RD's Pick: Vermont Bread Company Whole Wheat Bread via RDelicious Kitchen @rdkitchen

Following is the official definition of whole grains, approved and endorsed by the Whole Grains Council in May 2004:*
Whole grains or foods made from them contain all the essential parts and naturally-occurring nutrients of the entire grain seed in their original proportions. If the grain has been processed (e.g., cracked, crushed, rolled, extruded, and/or cooked), the food product should deliver the same rich balance of nutrients that are found in the original grain seed.
This definition means that 100% of the original kernel – all of the bran, germ, and endosperm – must be present to qualify as a whole grain.

Supermarket RD's Pick: Vermont Bread Company Whole Wheat Bread via RDelicious Kitchen @rdkitchen

So, is whole wheat the same as whole grain? Whole wheat is one kind of whole grain, so all whole wheat is whole grain, but not all whole grain is whole wheat.
Supermarket RD's Pick: Vermont Bread Company Whole Wheat Bread via RDelicious Kitchen @rdkitchenAnother key item to look at when you are choosing whole wheat bread is the ingredient list. The first word that should be listed is the word “whole”. That is ensuring that the bran, germ, and endosperm (pictured above) are all present.
Look out for the word “enriched” that often creeps in before the word “whole” on the ingredient list. This means that niacin, thiamine, riboflavin, folic acid, and iron are added in because the key nutrients coming from the bran and germ were stripped out in the first place during the refining process. Enriched bread offers benefits over your standard white bread, but going for a less processed option with it’s natural nutritious ingredients is your best bet.
Supermarket RD's Pick: Vermont Bread Company Whole Wheat Bread via RDelicious Kitchen @rdkitchenI like Vermont Bread Company’s whole wheat bread, because like all other ingredient lists, the shorter the list the better! Plus, it is made from ingredients that I know what they are and I can pronounce, while it’s competitor whole wheat bread has a laundry list of ingredients, with ingredients that I don’t even know what they are, plus 5 ingredients that are added sugars.
Sadly, some “wheat breads” have added molasses, brown sugar, or even dye to create a rich brown color, to get the consumer to assume that it is a whole wheat choice.
Supermarket RD's Pick: Vermont Bread Company Whole Wheat Bread via RDelicious Kitchen @rdkitchenThe bread it soft and fluffy making it perfect for sandwich making, sturdy for french toast, or great for a sunbutter & jelly sandwich.

Supermarket RD’s Pick: SunButter

Back to school time is just around the corner. Is your child’s school a peanut free zone? Learn about SunButter, the perfect nut free alternative why it’s #RDapproved making this a Supermarket RD’s Pick.
Supermarket RD's Pick via RDelicious Kitchen @rdkitchen

Peanut butter and jelly is the classic lunchbox favorite, especially for picky eaters, but what if you now are unable to bring peanut butter into school because it’s a peanut free zone?

Supermarket RD's Pick: SunButter via RDelicious Kitchen @rdkitchen

Peanuts and tree nuts are part of the top 8 food allergens. It’s a major concern for schools to be cautionary for their students, that they often make the school a peanut-free school zone.

What do you do with your picky eater now? When I was younger, I would pack a peanut butter and jelly sandwich with a piece of fruit every single day to school. It was quick and easy for my mom to prepare and I was a happy camper.

Supermarket RD's Pick: SunButter via RDelicious Kitchen @rdkitchen

Enter: SunButter – a sunflower seed spread. SunButter is a peanut and tree nut free alternative to peanut butter. Plus, it’s free of other food allergens making it a very child friendly choice.

Supermarket RD's Pick: SunButter via RDelicious Kitchen @rdkitchen

SunButter is made similar to a nut butter. They roast the sunflower seeds to make a more bold flavor and blend them into a spread. You can simply use SunButter for a “SunButter & Jelly” sandwich or check out this recipe section to try other creations.

Supermarket RD's Pick: SunButter via RDelicious Kitchen @rdkitchen

SunButter also provides a little bit of a different nutrition profile compared to it’s nut butter counterparts. They contain 1/3 less saturated fat than peanut butter. SunButter also has double the fiber, the same amount of protein, more vitamin E and no trans fats.  SunButter is also high in iron, phosphorus, and zinc.

Supermarket RD’s Pick: Black Bean Pasta

Add black bean pasta on to your shopping list this week. It’s pasta made from black beans, which means more protein and fiber than regular pasta. Let’s learn why black bean pasta is #RDapproved making this a Supermarket RD’s Pick

Supermarket RD's Pick - Dietitian approved items that you can find in the grocery store! #rdchat

Ever heard of black bean pasta? Simply made from black beans (and water), it is a great alternative to regular pasta for a low carb, high protein, and high fiber option. Since it is made from black beans, the color of the pasta is black, which may take a little time to get used to.
Remember when Heinz made green and purple ketchup? As a kid, I remember the purple ketchup was in one of my friends refrigerator. For fun we did a blind taste test and blind folded each other and taste tested the purple ketchup with regular ketchup on french fries to see if we could tell the difference. We couldn’t tell the difference! I guess I was a little bit of a foodie back in the day too!

Don’t let the color deny you of this delicious pasta option. It tastes like pasta, but a little more al dente. Kids love the different color and I used it for a Halloween themed dish topped with pesto calling it a “witches cauldron pesto pasta”
Supermarket RD's Pick: Black Bean PastaRather than calling it black bean pasta (I don’t know why people are scared of beans), you can call it protein pasta. With 25 grams of protein for a 2 oz serving, I think it can deserve that title.
Supermarket RD's Pick: Black Bean PastaThis would be a perfect addition to a “Meatless Monday” dinner. This pasta alone, breaks the myth of not getting enough protein, vegetarian style. With a filling 25 grams of protein and 12 grams of dietary fiber, this pasta has built in portion control.

Supermarket RD’s Pick: Cashew Milk

Looking for a nondairy milk, that is creamy, less in calories, but full in flavor? Cashew milk is this week’s Supermarket RD’s Pick! Check out why it is #RDapproved.

Supermarket RD's Pick - Dietitian approved items that you can find in the grocery store! #rdchat
This week’s Supermarket RD’s Pick is a staple found in my refrigerator – Cashew Milk! I do enjoy other nondairy milks too, but cashew milk has a little bit of an edge over the others (in my opinion).
Supermarket RD's Pick: Cashew Milk via RDelicious Kitchen
I use cashew milk in my coffee, cereal, smoothies, baked goods, etc. I like my coffee light, so with less calories and a really creamy consistency it works well.
What does cashew milk taste like? It’s creamy, hint of sweet, and a subtle cashew flavor.
Don’t get me wrong, I love almond milk, but cashew milk is a lot creamier. I would maybe compare cashew milk to a 2% consistency and other nondairy milks to a skim milk consistency.

How is cashew milk made?
The cashews are roasted and grinded into a butter that is used to make a creamy cashew milk.
Silk’s cashews milk is 25 calories per serving, 0g of saturated fat and cholesterol, 50% more calcium than dairy milk, free of dairy, soy, lactose, gluten, casein, egg, and MSG, with no artificial colors, flavors, and verified by the Non-GMO Project’s product verification program.
