Grocery Store Finds: October 2019

Take a look in this dietitian’s grocery cart and see what grocery store finds I found this month!

Grocery Store Finds with Chef Julie Harrington, RD @ChefJulie_RD #dietitian #personalshopper #healthy #rdapproved

At the end of October, every year more than 10,000 nutrition professionals and food industry executives gathered in Philadelphia for the annual Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo (FNCE®) hosted by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. It’s like the super bowl for dietitians. I spent most of my time at the expo hall, networking, and presenting for the first time.

As I wandered around the expo hall, there were a few trends that kept on popping up. Here are a few items that I was introduced to that I saw at the grocery store the next time I went grocery shopping.

Moon Cheese

Hello cheese lovers! Moon Cheese is for you. Moon Cheese is 100% natural cheese containing all the goodness of cheese and is a perfect on-the-go healthy snack with no refrigeration required! Enjoy Moon Cheese as is or add it on top of a salad for a savory crunch. My personal flavor is gouda!

Simple Mills Soft Baked Almond Flour Bars

Are there any brands that keep coming out with new product lines that just never disappoint you? Simple Mills is one of those brands for me. Now they have soft-baked almond flour bars.  These bars are made with whole food ingredients that make up the satisfying blend of textures. The pieces of nuts, seeds, and fruit blend with the soft-baked bar create a satisfying texture. All four bars varieties are naturally sweetened with honey & molasses.

Biena Chickpea Puffs

Biena, known for their crunchy chickpea snacks, now have a new product line, baked chickpea puffs. Plant-based protein snacks were a big buzz through the expo hall. While this is still a snack, it adds 7 grams of plant protein and 30% fewer carbs per serving than traditional chip-type snacks.

Rose Balsamic Vinegar

This rose balsamic vinegar was not a find from FNCE, but I couldn’t help myself when I saw it on the shelves at Whole Foods. This will take vinaigrettes up to the next level.

Siete Chickpea Flour Wraps

More plant-based proteins made an appearance but in the form of a wrap this time. Siete created a tortilla with chickpeas and olive oil, but don’t worry, it doesn’t taste like a pita! Their chickpea tortilla is ultra pliable and behaves and tastes suspiciously like a flour tortilla.

Grocery Store Finds: September 2019

Grocery Store Finds via Chef Julie Harrington, RD @ChefJulie_RD #dietitian #personalshopper #healthy #rdapproved

September, you are confusing. In the mornings I bundle up to take out Wally, but then in the afternoon, we are back to what feels like summer weather. If you’ve been following along on Instagram, I’ve been traveling a lot this month, so I didn’t do as much grocery shopping as I normally do, but I did find some new items this month to share!

Ronzoni Turmeric Pasta

hand holding ronzoni turmeric pasta at the grocery store

This is the first turmeric pasta I’ve seen on the grocery store shelves. Made with simply durum wheat semolina and turmeric this pasta has a bright and vibrant orange hue. While turmeric is known for its potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant health benefits, I am not sure how much is in one serving of pasta, and most likely does not reach the medicinal benefits. The pasta had a slight turmeric taste when tasted by itself. It tasted just like regular pasta.

(New Flavor Alert) Mush Overnight Oats

hand holding MUSH coffee + coconut cream overnight oats

New flavor alert! Mush Overnight Oats now has a coffee + coconut cream flavor and it is delicious! Yes, overnight oats are simple to make at home, but when you are in a pinch these are perfect. They even come with a little spoon secured under the lid. There is no sugar added and the ingredients are simple: Oats, Coconut, H2O, Cold-Brewed Coffee, Dates, Sea Salt.

Clio Greek Yogurt Bar

hand holding Clio hazelnut greek yogurt bar in the grocery store

This is what happens when you shop hungry. Just casually selecting my yogurt in the dairy section and then these caught my eye and they landed in my cart. I’m not going to complain because they are delicious! The Greek yogurt in the center of the chocolate coating has a texture like cheesecake. These are the perfect little sweet treat!

Simple Mills Cracker Snack Packs

hand holding simple mills cracker snack packs in the grocery store

These almond flour crackers have been around, but now they come in a little snack pack pouch. These come in handy for packing lunches, on the go, or if you are looking for pre-portioned snacks. I am a fan of all Simple Mills products. They are all made with simple ingredients, hence the name.

Grocery Store Finds: August 2019 (Back to School Edition)

Grocery Store Finds

New month, new grocery store finds! Sadly, summer is coming to an end and everyone is getting back into their normal work routines and students are heading back to school. This month I’m featuring easy, very little prep, and portable items that will come in handy as you are running out the door.

CuteCumber Poppers

hand holding CuteCumber Poppers at the grocery store

How cute are these snack-sized cucumbers?! Eat them right out of the package and enjoy as is or pair with your favorite dip. I’m curious how they would do if you pickled them? These are perfect if you are craving something crunchy.

Sabra Singles

hand holding Sabra Singles at the grocery store

Looking for something to pair with your CuteCumbers? Sabra singles are the perfect grab and go option to add with any veggies or whole-grain crackers. Already portioned sized, you won’t worry about over dunking from your hummus container.

Quaker Overnight Oats

hand holding Quaker overnight oats in the grocery store

I’m guilty of hitting the snooze button as many times as I can in, especially on Monday mornings. Have breakfast prepared and ready to go so you don’t skip out on breakfast. You can, of course, make overnight oats on your own, but this Quaker cup is very convenient. Just add in milk and any other toppings you like. My favorite combo topping is strawberries and peanut butter.

Stonyfield Snack Pack

hand holding Stonyfield Snack Pack in the grocery store

How many times have you packed a yogurt for lunch or packed one for your kids, but you forgot the pack the spoon? No spoon needed for these Stonyfield Snack Packs. Paired with graham crackers, they are the only edible utensil you will need.

Roasted Seaweed Snacks

hand holding Annie Chun's Seaweed Snacks at the grocery store

I’ve become slightly addicted to these seaweed snacks after discovering them this month. If you enjoy sushi you will love these! Seaweed contains a wide range of vitamins and minerals, including iodine, iron, and calcium. Some types can even contain high amounts of vitamin B12. Moreover, it’s a good source of omega-3 fats.

Grocery Store Finds: July 2019

Grocery Store Finds

New month, new grocery store finds! This month, Chef Abbie Gellman, RD and I hosted our first culinary workshop in NYC for healthcare professionals. It was such a success and thanks to our wonderful sponsors, we got to try a few new products. We cooked with them and did different tastings of all of these foods at the workshop and were enjoyed by all. Some are on the grocery store shelves now and some coming soon, so keep your eyes peeled at the grocery store.

New Flavor Alert: Wonderful Pistachios

wonderful pistachios instagram

New flavor alert! Wonderful Pistachios came out with 2 new flavors. Bonus – they are already shelled for you! Do you prefer salty or sweet? The chili roasted definitely have a lingering kick while the honey roasted is subtly sweet. Keep your eyes peeled because they are hitting the grocery store shelves soon! Can’t wait? Order them online.

Soom Tahini

soom tahini on instagram

Soom is the creamiest tahini I’ve ever tried. Top restaurants are now using in their restaurant dishes. In our culinary workshop, we made this amazing lemon tahini sauce to drizzle over roasted broccoli. Tahini is now trending and now tahini is being used in baked goods recipes.

New Flavor Alert: Siggi’s Coffee Yogurt

siggi's on instagram

I finally got my hands on the new Siggi’s coffee flavor. For the past couple of weeks, I’ve been stalking the dairy aisle for it to come it. I snagged the last one off the shelf. Coffee lovers rejoice! I am usually a one cup coffee kind of girl, but now I can enjoy the flavor throughout the day as a high protein snack.

Yondu Vegetable Essence

yondu on instagram

I was newly introduced to Yondu when they graciously let us host our culinary workshop class at their culinary studio in NYC. Yondu is a versatile savory seasoning that brings out the flavor of your ingredients. Made with fermented soybeans and a flavorful vegetable broth, add just 1 teaspoon to 2 cups of veggies. We did a taste test of sauteed kale with and without kale. Since then, Yondu has been included to my sauteed kale ever since.

Dream Greens

Dream Greens are locally grown all year round at AeroFarms indoor vertical farming company committed to making our planet greener. The vertical farm is located in the city of Newark, New Jersey. When you stack growing trays up high, the same piece of land becomes 390 times more productive! Learn more about vertical farming here.

It was fun getting other RD’s perspectives on their grocery store finds choices from coast to coast, especially since we all shop in different grocery stores.

Somersaults Sunflower Seed Crunchy Bites

hand holding somersaults sunflower seed crunchy bites

A product I just discovered is Somersaults Sunflower Seed Crunchy Bites. I bought them for my kids but I’m actually loving them for myself! Since my daughter is allergic to nuts, I love that they offer protein and fiber from sunflower seeds. The chocolate flavor looks and tastes like little cookies so my kids love them and I really like that they’re low in sugar!

Califia Farms Black and White Cold Brew Coffee

califia black & white unsweetened cold brew

Califia Farms Black and White Cold Brew Coffee. It has the perfect serving size and calorie count for a quick afternoon pick me up. It’s unsweetened and the first three ingredients are coffee, almond milk, and coconut cream. Each 10 fluid ounce bottle is just 60 calories and provides 25% of the Daily Value for calcium. Convenient, portable, and tasty!

Good Foods Plant Based Dips

good foods dip

Good Foods Plant Based Dips! They are plant based with no artificial ingredients and are dairy free. They come in buffalo, avocado pesto and queso (my favorite so it’s already gone!). The first ingredient is cauliflower. No added sugars, plus per serving there’s less than 50 calories, 3 grams fat, and under 5 grams carb. They are very yummy! For chips, I recommend Beanitos Chips for 4g fiber and 5g plant based protein too!

Trader Joe’s Swiss/Gruyere Cheese Blend

Trader Joe's shredded cheese blend swiss & gruyere

For those that need to stick to a low sodium diet, cheese can often be out of the question since most varieties are quite high in sodium. Shredded cheddar, jack, and mozzarella can have around 180mg per 1/4 cup serving. I was thrilled to find a Swiss/gruyere blend at Trader Joe’s with only 55mg sodium per 1/4 cup serving! Amazing!!

Take a look at what grocery store finds ended up in this dietitian’s cart this month.

Grocery Store Finds with Chef Julie Harrington, RD @ChefJulie_RD

How it already the end of May? This month has been quite a whirlwind. I was working on a bunch of recipe development projects which had me at the grocery store almost every other day, but I was laser-focused on the items that I needed to grab for the recipes. A few other items did end up in my grocery cart that has helped me get through this hectic month that I think you’ll enjoy!

Quaker Overnight Oats

Grocery Store Finds via Chef Julie Harrington, RD @ChefJulie_RD #dietitian #personalshopper #healthy #rdapproved

Yes, it is very easy to make your own overnight oats, but I give an A+ for convenience. Rolling into the summer months means a lot of road trips, vacations, and weekend adventures. Having a quick and easy breakfast will save you money instead of eating out but also start your day with something hearty and with long-lasting energy. They do have flavored varieties, but I like sticking to the unsweetened with chia seeds. I like to pair with a travel pack nut/seed butter and some fruit.

Carrington Farms Flax Chia Packets

Grocery Store Finds via Chef Julie Harrington, RD @ChefJulie_RD #dietitian #personalshopper #healthy #rdapproved

Speaking about traveling and being on the go, these Carrington Farms Flax Chia packets are a simple way to include heart-healthy omega-3s and fiber into your day. I always have a couple of these in my purse. Sprinkle or mix in with just about anything. (You can even sprinkle it into the oatmeal above!)

Wild Planet Wild Sockeye Salmon

Grocery Store Finds via Chef Julie Harrington, RD @ChefJulie_RD #dietitian #personalshopper #healthy #rdapproved

Looking to incorporate more seafood into your diet? Eating seafood two to three times per week reduces the risk of death from any health-related cause by 17 percent. Wild Planet’s sockeye salmon is canned fresh upon catch (rather than being frozen before canning), which results in superior flavor and texture. Top on a salad for lunch, turn into salmon cakes or enjoy with crackers. This is an affordable and convenient way to incorporate more seafood.

HI! Happy Inside Cereal

Grocery Store Finds via Chef Julie Harrington, RD @ChefJulie_RD #dietitian #personalshopper #healthy #rdapproved

Happy Inside is a cereal that supports digestive wellness with a 3-in-1 medley of prebiotics, probiotics, and fiber. In combination with new research, The WK Kellogg Institute for Food and Nutrition spent two years researching the microbiome, and realized probiotics alone aren’t enough. That’s why they created HI! Happy Inside, plant-based breakfast foods and snacks crafted with prebiotics, probiotics, and fiber. I like to enjoy this cereal with milk or on top of yogurt.

I cheated a little for this Grocery Store Finds round-up. This month I had the amazing opportunity to present at the 2nd Annual Culinary Nutrition Conference.

They put together awesome goodie bags for all the presenters and participants and I’m showcasing a few new items that were provided that I really enjoyed and I think you’ll like too!

Simply Organic Pre-Brew Coffee Spices

Grocery Store Finds via Chef Julie Harrington, RD @ChefJulie_RD #dietitian #personalshopper #healthy #rdapproved

Looking to add a little more flavor to your morning cup of joe? Simply Organic now makes a pre-brew coffee chai spice blend. The combination of cinnamon, cardamom, and ginger is a delicious addition to coffee. It’s like sipping on specialty coffee from a cafe in the comfort of your own home. Just simply add the pre-brew coffee spices to the coffee grounds and brew your coffee as you usually would. Mornings just got a little more exciting!

BuckWHAT! Noshes

Grocery Store Finds via Chef Julie Harrington, RD @ChefJulie_RD #dietitian #personalshopper #healthy #rdapproved

Buck…WHAT? These little noshes are buckwheat super snacks. Using whole grain buckwheat as the base adds protein, fiber, zinc, and manganese. And, it’s low on the glycemic scale so it keeps you feeling fuller longer. Naturally gluten-free and with no sugar added, these are a great grab and go snack.

Kosterina Olive Oil

Grocery Store Finds via Chef Julie Harrington, RD @ChefJulie_RD #dietitian #personalshopper #healthy #rdapproved

I had the pleasure of cooking with Kosterina Extra Virgin Olive Oil at the Culinary Nutrition Conference and learned a lot about this particular brand. Kosterina olive oil is cold pressed from early harvest olives, called “agourelio” in Greek, which means the olives are collected when green and raw. The higher chlorophyll content in unripe olives makes the oil greener and richer in healthy polyphenols.

Did you know? Olive oil must have a polyphenol content of 55mg/kgto be considered Extra Virgin. Kosterina olive oil has polyphenol content of more than 400 mg/kg!

Sweet Chili Pistachios

Grocery Store Finds via Chef Julie Harrington, RD @ChefJulie_RD #dietitian #personalshopper #healthy #rdapproved

You might be thinking .. pistachios, that’s nothing new. But have you tried the sweet chili flavor? I am not a huge fan of too much spice but the sweet and spicy is balanced perfectly. Warning: they are addicting. Good thing they come in this portioned-controlled pack for a heart-healthy snack.

Have you tried any of these products before? I’d love to hear your thoughts. Comment below!

Grocery Store Finds: March 2019

Take a look at what grocery store finds ended up in this dietitian’s cart this month.

Grocery Store Finds with Chef Julie Harrington, RD @ChefJulie_RD

Do you feel like the months are flying by? For me, January felt like an eternity, but now February and March flew by. I’m okay with it because the consistently warmer weather is in the near future. Right now, New Jersey can’t make up its mind. Yesterday I was bundled up in my winter jacket and today I’m in capris and a windbreaker.

Gourmet Garden Lightly Dried Herbs

I like using fresh herbs in my recipes, but often times I buy a full bunch and the leftovers go bad waiting to be used in the refrigerator. My pantry is stocked with dried herbs, but sometimes a recipe or a garnish needs a pop of freshness at the end. Enter: Gourmet Gardens Lightly Dried Herbs. First off, they are already chopped, so that’s a timesaver right there. Also, being lightly dried, they can last up to 4 weeks in the refrigerator after opened.

Quaker Oat Beverage

There are so many dairy-free milk alternatives on the shelves of the grocery store and stores are making room now for oat milk. Even coffee shops are offering oat milk lattes. Like most plant-based milk (besides soy milk), it does not meet the protein mark like regular cow’s milk does but does serve as a lower calorie option with the added benefit of 4 grams of fiber per cup. This oat milk does have an edge up compared to other dairy-free milk alternatives, is that it is very creamy and can be used whereever you would use cow’s milk.

Cauliflower Crackers

Cauliflower is literally made into everything these days. I was intrigued by these as I feel like they are trying to be a “healthier” Cheez-It. Using various plant-based flours as the base, the cheesy flavor is there, but there is a distinct cauliflower aftertaste. But alas, in my opinion, not as good as the real deal. Both are still a processed snack, so enjoy along with a balanced diet. Try them and let me know what you think!

Dave’s Killer Bread English Muffins

When I was a retail dietitian, I had the opportunity to learn about Dave’s Killer Bread when it first hit the grocery store shelves. Learning about their brand story, I felt passionate about their mission. Bonus, their bread is absolutely delicious! It’s been great seeing their brand grow with new product lines, with bread to bagels and now English muffins.

Nohmad Chocolate

I’m a sucker for chocolate. This was a definite impulse purchase as I was killing time strolling through the store, after the store making an announcement that their credit card machines were down. Made with maple sugar, each bite definitely has a subtle maple flavor. My favorite part was the crunchy coffee bean bits. At $5.99 per bar, I think I’ll wait for a coupon to try one of their other flavors. I think next I want to try their creamy coconut chocolate.

This month I was gifted a few items to try myself, that I am excited to share with you. I personally enjoy trying all these new items. Why? Because it helps me understand the grocery shopping experience from the consumer side and I can first hand try these items and tell you a little about them before you add them to your grocery cart.

Stonyfield Organic Kids’ Whole Milk Pouches

Grocery Store Finds: Stonyfield whole milk pouches via Chef Julie Harrington, RD @ChefJulie_RD #dietitian #personalshopper #healthy #rdapproved

Stonyfield Organic is committed to providing parents with better for you organic snack options made without the use of toxic persistent pesticides, artificial hormones, artificial preservatives, antibiotics or GMOs. While I am not a parent myself (unless you count my fur-child), my friends and clients who have kids ask me about snacks for them on a regular basis.

All five tasty flavors – including Strawberry Beet Berry and Pear Spinach Mango – are offered in convenient 3.5oz single-serve pouches that make it easy for kids to get snacks made with real fruit and veggies any time of day. Especially for kids, a healthy grab and go snack option is key. Each pouch is also a good source of vitamin D, an excellent source of calcium, and 5 grams of protein to support healthy bones and muscles.

Full disclosure: I tried them myself and they were subtly sweet. I asked my tiny human friends to give them a try too. They were sucked down in less than a minute. I’d say these are kid-approved!

88 Acres Maple Sunflower Seed Butter Pouches

Grocery Store Finds: 88 Acres sunflower seed butter via Chef Julie Harrington, RD @ChefJulie_RD #dietitian #personalshopper #healthy #rdapproved

Not only did 88 Acres get a makeover with their packaging, but they came out with a new product line seed butter pouches. They sent me a few to try. I already love their seed butters but now with their travel size pouches, it makes it easier to travel with. I like to always have one in my bag with a piece of fruit to prevent any hangry situations.

88 Acres seed butters are a great option for those with nut allergies. Use as you would use with any nut butter. My favorite combo so far is the maple sunflower seed butter on a banana. Along with a rich spectrum of minerals, each little sunflower seed is brimming with a duo of healthy fats and antioxidant vitamin E. Both work together to keep our body’s cells (from our hair, to our skin, to our lungs) supple and strong.

One Degree Organic Sprouted Steel Cut Oats

Grocery Store Finds: One Degree Oats via Chef Julie Harrington, RD @ChefJulie_RD #dietitian #personalshopper #healthy #rdapproved

February is Heart Health Month and oats have a stellar reputation for their heart health benefit. I recently wrote a whole article about the difference between steel cut, rolled, and quick oats.

One Degree oats are sprouted. Studies show sprouted oats are higher in heart-healthy fiber, make nutrients more bioavailable, and are easier to digest than their non-sprouted counterparts. They cook up just like regular oats!

I love the concept of their brand: One Degree of separation. Their transparency technology shows you how they bring food straight from the farm to your table by simply scanning or entering the code. Leading in food transparency is at the heart of everything they do.

Banza Rice

Grocery Store Finds: Chickpea Rice via Chef Julie Harrington, RD @ChefJulie_RD #dietitian #personalshopper #healthy #rdapproved

Banza, one of the most popular chickpea pasta, just came out with a new product line – chickpea rice! Banza Chickpea Rice has 3x the protein, 2x the fiber, and nearly 30% fewer net carbs than white rice.

Use this chickpea rice wherever you would use rice in a recipe. I am excited to play around with recipe ideas using this new chickpea rice. I’m thinking of burrito bowls, chicken and rice soup, risotto! The possibilities are endless.

Now, let’s get to the items that were in my grocery cart this month!

Zespri SunGold Kiwifruit

Grocery Store Finds via Chef Julie Harrington, RD @ChefJulie_RD #dietitian #personalshopper #healthy #rdapproved

One Zespri SunGold kiwifruit provides a generous hit of the vitamin C we need to help strengthen the body’s natural defenses.  More than three times the amount found in oranges, in fact. SunGold kiwis are sweeter than conventional kiwis and even get sweeter as they ripen. Their skin is also smoother and thinner than a typical kiwifruit, so don’t waste your time peeling it, just bite right in!

Try this recipe: Dark Chocolate Covered Kiwi Pops

Tasty Bite Brown Rice

Grocery Store Finds via Chef Julie Harrington, RD @ChefJulie_RD #dietitian #personalshopper #healthy #rdapproved

Tasty Bite’s steamable brown rice pouches were brought to my attention from reader Kelly G. Thanks for emailing me about these! I found them in the grocery store and I checked out the ingredient list and nutrition facts and it looks like these are going to be making a common appearance in my cart. With just water, organic whole grain brown rice, and organic sunflower oil, these are a convenient item to keep stocked in your pantry whenever you need a quick whole grain.

Beyond Meet Crumbles

Grocery Store Finds via Chef Julie Harrington, RD @ChefJulie_RD #dietitian #personalshopper #healthy #rdapproved

A couple of years back I told you about Beyond Meat’s Beyond Burgers as a plant-based alternative. For your next taco night opt for Beyond Meat’s other product like Beyond Beef Crumbles. With 13 g of plant-based protein per serving opt for a meatless option, or go half-and-half with Beyond Beef Crumbles and beef. Plus, already seasoned, you don’t have to worry about that extra step in the cooking process.

Barilla Chickpea Pasta

Grocery Store Finds via Chef Julie Harrington, RD @ChefJulie_RD #dietitian #personalshopper #healthy #rdapproved

There is a new legume-based pasta on the block! Barilla just came out with both chickpea and red lentil pasta. Just one simple ingredient, chickpeas! (or red lentils, if choosing the red lentil variety). One 2-oz. serving of the chickpea pasta has 13 grams of protein and 6 grams of fiber. Casarecce is a shorter pasta noodle that appears to be rolled upon itself with a groove down the middle. This shape pairs well with a clingy kind of sauce like pesto.

Fiber One Strawberries
& Vanilla Clusters

Grocery Store Finds via Chef Julie Harrington, RD @ChefJulie_RD #dietitian #personalshopper #healthy #rdapproved

General Mills recently came out with a new Fiber One cereal variety. They sent me a box to try, but the cereal monster in my house ate the whole box only after I tried one handful. I’m glad this new variety hit the shelves so I was able to buy it myself to enjoy. Just one cup of cereal provides 35% daily value of fiber.

Let’s get shopping! Comment below of new products you are loving lately.
